2011 ACPE Scholarships

"This year the Association of Computer Professionals in Education (ACPE) has allocated $10,000 for scholarships of up to $2,500 each for students in Oregon and Washington. These scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors who have been actively involved in the use of technology during their high school careers and are planning to pursue studies in a technology related field. A completed application packet should be submitted to Sandy Maynard, but postmarked no later than February 28, 2011. Successful applicants will be notified via email by March 14, 2011. The amount of the award will be paid to the college/school of the recipients choice."

Submitting Application Materials

To submit a scholarship application packet, please follow the outlined steps below. Note: An incomplete application will not be considered. All materials must be submitted as a complete packet in one envelope by the application deadline to be considered.

Criteria to qualify for the scholarship:

Currently a senior at an Oregon or Washington K-12 public or private educational institution.
Has a minimum C+ GPA (include certified transcripts).
Has demonstrated high interest and innovative use of technology during high school career.
Has demonstrated some community/school involvement, preference of technology focus.
Plans to pursue studies in a technology related field to obtain the minimum of a two-year degree.
Has provided description of a technology project.
Submitted evidence, in an accessible form, demonstrating the project.
Has completed the Student Applicant Form, signed by 2 nominating teachers.

Submit completed application packet to Sandy Maynard at the address below postmarked no later than February 28, 2011. Finalists will be selected and notified prior to the ACPE Conference to be held on May 4-6, 2008. The amount of the award will be paid to the college/school of the awardee's choice. Although not required, awardees are encouraged to attend the conference in Welches, Oregon on Thursday, May 6th when the scholarship awards are announced during our business luncheon.

Careers in IT: Education Traveling Road Show

Do you know a middle school, high school, or college level student who is interested in exploring a technology-related career? Then invite them to the IT Traveling Roadshow, a free event designed for middle and high school students and their parents who want to learn more about technology careers and the educational paths available to enter the field.

Eric VanderHouwen, president of VanderHouwen Associates, Inc., a premier staffing provider of technology professionals in the Pacific Northwest, will kick off the evening with a 15-minute keynote speech outlining the state of the technology field in the region.

Current WSU Vancouver students or recent graduates of the technology programs at WSU Vancouver including management information systems, digital technology and culture and computer science will take part in a panel discussion that will explore how they got interested in technology, what their educational journey has been like and what their career aspirations are.

Target Audience: Middle-high school students and their parents and current college students who have not yet declared a major and are interested in technology

SEMI Foundation's High Tech U Program

The SWWDC (Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council) is bringing the SEMI Foundation's High Tech U Program to Clark County on June 15-17. The program will be held at WaferTech and Hewlett-Packard and is co-sponsored by Clark College, Columbia Machine, Underwriters Laboratories, Employers Overload, the Clark County High Technology & Community Council, and the SEMI Pacific NW Steering Committee

SEMI High Tech U is a three-day, industry-driven math and science-based career exploration program produced and presented by the non-profit SEMI Foundation in conjunction with our local sponsors. The program will provide 35-40 sophomores and juniors with an opportunity to learn more directly from practitioners about how math and science are used in the high tech world.

Since its inception in 2001, SEMI has graduated more than 2,200 students around the world from its High Tech U program. In a survey of 225 recent graduates, as a result of their High Tech U experience, 98% said they had confidence to try new courses and activities and 71% who were undecided about their educational path now want to pursue a path in engineering. We are eager to build on this success here locally.

Please note the following:

Applications are due by this Friday, June 4. Each district has been allocated a number of slots. Slots that are not filled by the district will be made available to other districts.
Targeted students are 14-17 years old, B/C (grade) students with a foundation in math or science and who would benefit from hands-on experience and exposure to careers in the high tech world.
The SWWDC and its partners are very excited about this opportunity for students in Clark County! Please pick up an application from Mrs. Downs in the Career Center and completed applications must be returned to the CHS Career Center no later than 2:30pm, Friday, June 4th.

SEMI High Tech U

Attention Math, Science, and Technology Juniors and Seniors:

(A word of caution… the opportunity falls during Finals which is unfortunate because it is targeting B and C students. However, Camas HS will only receive 4-6 of the 40 spots)

STEM Opportunity:

A fantastic science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) opportunity will be open to a few Camas High School students. The Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council will be partnering with the SEMI Foundation , Clark College, Hewlett-Packard, Wafer Tech, Columbia Machine, Underwriters Laboratories, and the Clark County High Technology & Community Council, to bring SEMI High Tech U to Clark County on June 15, 16 and 17th. The actual activities will take place at Hewlett-Packard, Wafer Tech, and Clark College. The other partners are graciously contributing funds and employees to lead the High Tech U activities and mock interviews.

SW Washington Opportunity Internship Program

Student Expectations

Opportunity Internship Program (OIP)
The goal of OIP is to provide low-income high school students work experience in a field of their interest, and to encourage them to pursue post secondary education in a related field. The OIP achieves this by partnering with employers to provide a minimum of 90-hour internships for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors in high demand careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Mathematics (STEM). Students who successfully complete the internship will receive a $450 stipend and scholarship for post-secondary education expenses.

Students eligible for the OIP

Are at least 16 years old and a sophomore, junior, or senior in high school
Qualify for the federal free and reduced lunch program
Interested in pursuing post-secondary enrollment for training in a STEM career
Have demonstrated work-readiness skills (such as punctuality, commitment, responsibility)

Student Expectations Prior to Internship:

Complete all required program application paperwork in a timely manner
Work with the STEM Coach and school staff to develop a career learning plan that includes internship and post-secondary objectives and plans
Complete a Federal Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) within 30 days of program enrollment
Participate in required work readiness training activities which will include: cover letter and resume writing, interviewing skills, on-the-job expectations, employee rights and responsibilities, communication and issue resolution, and other topics as identified by STEM Coach and district staff
Prepare and submit a resume and cover letter to apply for an internship
Interview with employers to secure an internship

During the Internship:

Attend company orientation and company tour
Perform tasks as described in position description and assigned by supervisor
Meet monthly with STEM coach to discuss experience and progress on career learning plan
Complete required documentation

Post-Internship:

Participate in post-program evaluation
Write thank-you letter to company/supervisor
Continue to work with STEM coach towards career plan objectives

Before embarking on a career in technology, students need the knowledge and skills necessary to find success in the field. Most of the time, an education is a prerequisite for such jobs. Students studying technology, especially ones who enjoy their classes, may find financing an education to be more difficult than obtaining it. National CTE Month Theme, Logo Design Contest

ACTE Announces 2010 National CTE Month Theme, Logo Design Contest

ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announces the 2010 Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month theme—CTE: Invest in Your Future. ACTE is hosting its annual CTE Month Logo Design Contest and is looking for logo submissions that illustrate the importance of CTE in providing the skills necessary for students to be competitive in the workforce. The contest is open to all CTE students. The designer of the winning CTE Month logo will receive a check for $250.

Logos must be original designs by CTE students and must follow the following criteria:

Logo must incorporate the CTE Month theme—CTE: Invest in Your Future.
Logo must be easily reproduced both in color and black and white.
Logo must be submitted in the requested format.

ACTE prefers a two-color logo design submitted in EPS (Illustrator) format, with a printed proof of the logo submission included. Entries may be submitted by mail or e-mail. For mail entries, please send logo on a CD to: ACTE Marketing Department, ACTE, 1410 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. E-mail entries should be sent to jmiller@acteonline.org and must include the EPS file and a PDF of the logo.

The following information must also be included (typed or printed) with each submission:

FIRST Robotics Team Places 4th Regionals

The Camas-Washougal FIRST Robotics team ranked fourth out of 54 teams at the Oregon Regional Competition this past weekend. In addition, the team brought home the General Motors Industrial Design Award for the simplicity and reliability of their design as well as for incorporating organic materials in its construction. The end of this month the team will travel to Seattle to compete against 63 other teams.
